Pinterest 2026 format update

Idea Pins support up to 20 slides. Video Pins can use vertical 9:16 for mobile-first playback. Shopping Pin tag overlays need a safe zone, and Pins taller than 2:3 are still cropped in the Feed grid.

All Pinterest Formats at a Glance (2026)

Pinterest behaves more like a visual search engine than a social feed. The ratio decision starts with how a Pin occupies the search grid, then branches into full-screen Idea Pins, video playback, product tags, covers, and paid formats.

The short version is simple: 2:3 is the grid-first working ratio, 9:16 is the immersive full-screen format, and 1:1 is mostly a reusable fallback.

Visual Search Math

The Pinterest Grid: Why 2:3 Is the Golden Ratio

Pinterest users arrive with search intent: recipes, room ideas, products, outfits, tutorials, and reference boards. Your Pin is competing inside a two-column masonry grid, so visual area matters before the user even reads a title.

At a fixed column width, taller Pins occupy more screen space. But Pinterest caps the useful grid height at 2:3. Anything taller is accepted as an upload, then cropped in the Feed preview.

2:3 Gets Max Grid Height1:155,696px2 at 236px column width2:383,544px2, maximum without crop1:2.1Cropped back to 2:3 in the grid

Grid coverage math

Pinterest Grid Screen Coverage Math:

Column width:     ~236px in a 2-column grid

Pin height in grid:
  1:1   (1000 x 1000): 236px wide x 236px tall -> 55,696px2
  2:3   (1000 x 1500): 236px wide x 354px tall -> 83,544px2
  1:2   (1000 x 2000): 236px wide x 354px tall -> 83,544px2, cropped
  1:2.1 (1000 x 2100): 236px wide x 354px tall -> 83,544px2, cropped

Key insight:
  2:3 gives you the maximum grid height Pinterest allows.
  Any taller ratio gives zero additional grid space.
  The extra height is only visible after a click.

The math

A 2:3 Pin gets about 50% more grid height than a 1:1 Pin at the same column width. A taller 1:2.1 Pin does not get more Feed area; it is simply truncated to the same visible 2:3 footprint.

Exact Crop Rule

Tall Pins and the Grid Crop: Exact Pixel Rules

Pinterest accepts tall Pins for infographics, tutorials, recipes, and comparison charts, but the Feed grid does not reward the extra height. For a 1000 x 2100px asset, the visible Feed preview is the top 1000 x 1500px.

That makes y=1500px the practical crop line. Anything below it must be treated as post-click detail, not the message that earns the click.

Tall Pin crop rule

Pinterest Grid Crop Rules:

Pin canvas:          1000 x 2100px (1:2.1)
Grid display:        1000 x 1500px (2:3) - top portion shown
Cropped area: 1000 x 600px - bottom portion hidden in grid
Crop line position: y = 1500px from top

What users see:
  Top 1500px in the Feed grid
  Expand indicator at the bottom of the grid card
  Full 2100px height after clicking the Pin

Safe content zone:
  Keep all critical content inside the top 1500px.
  Treat the bottom 600px as bonus content only.
  Never place the product, face, title, or CTA below y=1500px.

Common mistake

Designers often put the product, CTA, or payoff at the bottom of a long infographic. In the Pinterest grid, that bottom section is invisible until the user opens the Pin.

Use caseWhy it can still work
InfographicUsers click through to read full step-by-step or data content.
Recipe / tutorialMulti-step instructions can extend below the preview once the top 1500px works alone.
Product comparisonExtra rows become useful after click-through, but the opening frame still carries the promise.

Full-Screen Storytelling

Idea Pins: Full-Screen Immersive Format

Idea Pins are not ordinary grid Pins. They use a 9:16 full-screen, multi-slide format for on-platform storytelling. The format is closer to a persistent story sequence than a single external-link Pin.

Because Pinterest adds progress, profile, title, description, and reaction UI, the central 1080 x 1410px safe zone is the part that should carry all critical content.

  Keep faces and products near y=500 to y=1300.
  Leave the bottom 340px clear for Pinterest UI.

Video

Video Pins: Three Ratios, Three Use Cases

Video Pins follow the same grid logic as image Pins. A 2:3 video gets the strongest Feed preview, 1:1 is a cross-platform fallback, and 9:16 becomes valuable when the opened playback experience matters more than the grid preview.

Feed playback is muted, so the first few seconds need visible action, readable text, or a clear product reveal before audio becomes relevant.

Commerce

Shopping Pins: Product Tag Safe Zones

Shopping Pins add interactive product tags directly on the image. Those tags are useful only when they do not cover the product, collide with other labels, or fall too close to an edge where the price bubble can clip.

The practical design rule is to keep products centered, leave the top and bottom UI bands quiet, and place tag dots inside a controlled 880 x 1320px working zone.

Shopping Pin Product Tag Safe Zone (1000 x 1500px):

Tag dot size:       ~24px diameter
Price bubble: ~120 x 40px, extends right and down from dot

Tag placement rules:
  Avoid tags within 60px of any edge.
  Avoid bottom 100px; it conflicts with Pinterest title UI.
  Avoid top 80px; it conflicts with the save button area.
  Space tags at least 80px apart.

Recommended tag zone:
  x=60 to x=940, y=80 to y=1400
  About 880 x 1320px.

Product tagging rule

Tag a product at a recognizable point, not at the edge of the object. A dress tag belongs near the waist or body, not at the hem; a furniture tag belongs on the object surface, not in empty background.

Overlooked Assets

Board Covers and Profile: The Overlooked Assets

Pinterest Board Covers and Profile Covers are often treated as secondary assets, but they shape how organized and trustworthy a profile feels. Board Covers are especially tricky because desktop and mobile do not show the same crop.

Upload a square Board Cover, then keep important text and graphics inside the central 800 x 540px so the desktop 3:2 crop and mobile square crop both survive.

  Let background texture extend to the full square.
  Do not put board titles in the top or bottom 130px.

Paid Formats

Pinterest Ad Formats: The Complete Ratio Matrix

Pinterest ads look much closer to organic Pins than ads on many other platforms. That means paid performance depends heavily on whether the Pin already works in the search grid: clear subject, strong 2:3 composition, readable thumbnail text, and safe UI placement.

Standard Image Ads and Shopping Ads should start from the same 2:3 grid logic as organic Pins. Max Width Video is the main exception because it uses a 16:9 landscape asset for a full-width mobile impression.

Max Width Video Ad

Max Width Video Ad Specs:

Ratio:        16:9
Dimensions:   1920 x 1080px
File size:    Max 2GB
Duration: 3 seconds to 15 minutes
Display: Full Feed width on mobile
Desktop: Single-column width like a standard Pin

Use case:
  Brand awareness, product launches, high-impact moments.
  Expect a higher CPM than standard Pin ads.

Pinterest ad safe zone

Standard Image / Video Ad Safe Zone (1000 x 1500px, 2:3):

Promoted label:    Bottom-left, about 80 x 24px
Save button:       Top-right, about 40 x 40px
Title overlay: Bottom ~80px in Feed grid

Safe zone:         Center 880 x 1380px
                   x=60 to x=940, y=60 to y=1440

Text in image:
  Use minimal, large, high-contrast text.
  It must remain readable at about 236px wide in the grid.

Decision Framework

The Search-Engine-First Framework: Choose Your Pin Type and Ratio

The first question is not "which ratio looks best?" The first question is "what kind of discovery moment is this asset supposed to win?" Pinterest is a search and save platform, so Pin type, search result visibility, and click-through readability should drive the export.

Use the decision tree below to separate grid-first static Pins, full-screen Idea Pins, video Pins, shopping content, and paid placements before you choose a canvas.

Decision FrameworkStatic imageStandard or Shopping Pin -> 2:3Tall contentKeep key content above y=1500Video2:3 grid or 9:16 full-screenMulti-pageIdea Pin -> 9:16Ads2:3 standard or 16:9 Max Width

Search-engine-first decision tree

You are publishing:

Static image content:
  Product / ecommerce:
    -> Shopping Pin, 2:3 (1000 x 1500px)
       Add product tags inside the safe tag zone.

  Infographic / tutorial / recipe:
    -> Standard Pin, 2:3 if the content fits inside 1500px.
    -> Tall Pin, 1000 x 2100px only when more height is necessary.
       Critical content must stay above y=1500px.

  Lifestyle / inspiration:
    -> Standard Pin, 2:3 with high-quality vertical photography.

  Cross-platform reuse:
    -> Square Pin, 1:1 (1000 x 1000px)

Video content:
  Product demo / tutorial:
    -> Video Pin, 2:3 (1000 x 1500px)

  Mobile full-screen:
    -> Video Pin, 9:16 (1080 x 1920px)
       Cropped to 2:3 in the grid.

Multi-page content:
  -> Idea Pin, 9:16 (1080 x 1920px)
     Use 5-10 slides; max 20 slides.

Paid ads:
  Brand or product promotion -> Standard Image Ad, 2:3.
  High-impact video -> Max Width Video Ad, 16:9.
  Multi-product display -> Carousel Ad, 1:1.
  Ecommerce catalog -> Collections Ad or Shopping Ad.

Source Files

The 2-File Strategy: Cover All Pinterest Formats with 2 Source Files

Pinterest production can stay simple if you separate grid-first assets from full-screen assets. Keep one 2:3 source for Standard Pins, Shopping Pins, standard ads, and square crops. Keep one 9:16 source for Idea Pins, vertical video, and cross-platform story formats.

When a tall infographic is needed, extend the 2:3 master downward rather than designing a 2100px image from the bottom up.

2-File StrategyMaster 1: 2:3Standard, Shopping, AdsMaster 2: 9:16Idea Pins, vertical videoSquare Crop1:1 carousel fallbackTall Extension1000 x 2100 infographicsCross-PlatformStories, Shorts, Instagram

2-file source workflow

The 2-file Pinterest source strategy:

Master 1: 2:3 image / video (1000 x 1500px)
  -> Standard Pin
  -> Shopping Pin
  -> Standard Image Ad
  -> Standard Video Ad
  -> 1:1 crop for square Pins and Carousel Ads
  -> Tall extension to 1000 x 2100px for recipes and infographics

Master 2: 9:16 image / video (1080 x 1920px)
  -> Idea Pin
  -> 9:16 Video Pin
  -> Instagram Stories, TikTok, YouTube Shorts
  -> 2:3 crop for standard Pinterest vertical output
  -> 1:1 crop for square fallback assets

Core insight:
  2:3 is Pinterest's golden ratio.
  It is the tallest Feed grid shape that avoids cropping.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Fast answers for Pinterest pin size, tall Pin crop behavior, Idea Pin safe zones, Shopping Pin tags, and video ratios.

What is the best aspect ratio for Pinterest pins in 2026?

The best aspect ratio for Pinterest pins is 2:3 (1000x1500px). It gives the maximum Feed grid height without cropping. A 2:3 Pin occupies about 50% more vertical grid space than a 1:1 square Pin, while anything taller than 2:3 is cropped to the same visible grid height.

What happens to Pinterest pins taller than 2:3?

Pins taller than 2:3 are cropped at the 2:3 line in the Feed grid. For a 1000x2100px Pin, the visible grid area is the top 1000x1500px and the bottom 600px is hidden until the user opens the Pin. Keep products, faces, titles, and CTAs above y=1500px.

What is the Pinterest Idea Pin aspect ratio and safe zone?

Pinterest Idea Pins use a 9:16 format at 1080x1920px. Keep critical content inside the center 1080x1410px area from y=170 to y=1580. The top 170px is reserved for progress and profile UI, and the bottom 340px is reserved for title, description, and reactions.

What is the difference between a standard Pin and an Idea Pin?

Standard Pins are single static images or videos, usually 2:3, that display in the Feed grid and can link externally. Idea Pins are multi-page 9:16 full-screen stories designed for on-platform discovery. They do not behave like ordinary grid Pins and should be planned as a separate format.

What are the Pinterest Shopping Pin product tag safe zones?

For a 1000x1500px Shopping Pin, keep product tags in the zone x=60 to x=940 and y=80 to y=1400. Each tag dot is about 24px, the price bubble is about 120x40px, and tags should be spaced at least 80px apart to prevent overlap.

What video aspect ratios does Pinterest support?

Pinterest supports 2:3 (1000x1500px), 1:1 (1000x1000px), and 9:16 (1080x1920px) video Pins. 2:3 is recommended for maximum grid height, 1:1 is useful for cross-platform reuse, and 9:16 is full-screen after click but cropped to 2:3 in the Feed grid.
